Milk and Honey Home is the new address. This ol' blog sure has been good to me, but it was time to make the portfolio look more professional. If you like reading this blog, please subscribe via email or a browser in the new one. Lots of things still are incomplete (like the blogroll), but it will get there--promise.

I will do an adequate post to thank Ellie Snow (mint blog) and Chris, the blog butler, very soon. They were awesome and I would recommend them to anyone.

It's a small world, too. I just found her blog and realized that she was the stylist for photographer Rob Brinson's images (well, some of them anyway) that I posted the other day. Even with 5 million people, Atlanta is not such a big city afterall.

Are y'all shopping today? I can't do it. I did buy some gifts from Brooke's shop Pure & Noble since she is having a little sale and am planning to take advantage of Ceri Hoover's 20 percent off. I'm buying handmade this Christmas!

So Happy Thanksgiving! This is me, thankful for a clean and quiet home. There is really no other way to scrub and clean and organize for a shoot than kicking out my husband and the boys. We are having Thanksgiving today at my in-law's place at Lake Lanier....so I just pleaded for them to head out early. I was so happy to walk around in a clean and ready house that I had to pull out the camera at 9 pm. It is like spotting the Lochness Monster. When you have little boys, no one would ever believe your home was clean. You try to catch a shot for proof.

Sherry came over and spent about all day with me. I wish I had before pictures of my office. (Just insert "Hoarders" here and you can imagine. When they came to scout our home this was where I threw everything without a home. You couldn't walk in it.)

She took everything out, organized and put it back in (beautiful) order. I am so thankful for her help!

She really is like a mentor, too. She's been designing for fifteen years, and been published often, so she has so much information to share and I am like a little sponge when I'm with her. She gives me tips on what she does with clients, shows me hidden resources in Atlanta and spends hours with me in ADAC. Why? She is just that kind of a person. While she was working I was trying to organize, but mostly I was pulling out old tear-sheets and saying, "Look, Sherry! Couldn't you eat this room?" She would oblige and then continue cleaning up my crap.

I am not a real fan of color-coded books in libraries, but LOVE them in an office! So calming on the eye.

Why didn't I think of putting lamp shades with lamp shades?

And Elle Decor with Elle Decor and Country Home with Country Home? This decorator is so happy.

She even pulled out a roll of burlap from her trunk and cut me a runner for my desk on the spot. (I'll get a pic next time.)

It is weird (and good) being in the house alone. I won't lie.

Found Julia on demand...(little tidbit here. I used to teach at Campbell High School where she went. I even taught English with her former teacher, Mrs. Romanchuk. Some good stories there.)

And about Jill Brinson--I am such a dork. How did I not know that the photographer, Rob Brinson, is married to her and lives in this home? I just didn't put two and two together.

Sherry told me this. I hope I can act a little normal around him. His wife has perfect taste--there are not many homes where I love everything about it.

kitchens & being thankful

Hey Brandi, this one is for you.....

So last week I was writing about kitchens and how I'm thinking that we will be seeing a lot more of rustic wood kitchens soon. Just like life: you say something then you see it everywhere....

In Southern Living & House Beautiful this month I saw examples of this. Southern Living featured a kitchen with loads of reclaimed wood and House Beautiful's cover is a natural wood tone as well.

I do kinda hate trends, but they are inevitable. And this is my prediction for the next few years, at least.

I am very sorry it is sideways (there is no way to rotate after uploading, right?) If you turn your head you will see the wood island and the wine barrel chandelier.

I love this look, though, because I think it will stand the test of time. (I also think white kitchens will, too!) I recently watched Woody Allen's Crimes & Misdemeanors for the first time--and I was in awe of how timeless and not dated Woody Allen's character's NY apartment was. It was natural wood. It looked so simple against all of the hard, angular '80s decor in the rest of the film.

But what I also think we will be seeing more of is tables in lieu of large islands. I think because of our downturned economy and because of the "trend" to eat at home and eat locally (which I hope is here to stay!! I wish I would never see another McDonalds again.), having a warm & intimate eat-in kitchen is something that is definitely not going away anytime soon.

And even though this kitchen is white, you have so much warm wood with the ceiling and the table (and no large island!) (House Beautiful or Elle Decor? forgive me I forgot.)

So on this Day II of honoring those who have gone before us, I must include Country Home Magazine. Tiffany from Holiday, though, said that she heard Country Home is making a comeback. Is this true?

I would love it if it were so, but when I bought what I thought was a new Country Home at Barnes & Noble a few months back, I felt a little gipped because it was just a "bookazine" reprint of homes I have already seen (and loved, mind you!). If this news is true, please do fill us in someone!

But while we wait, here are a few images of the beloved magazine. And, actually, the name is such a misnomer. I find many modern touches and many edgy rooms in its pages. Here are a few. Do you still love this mag?

Do you remember this nook? I find myself thinking of it often. Like a room within a room. And please check out the single metallic silver sconce on the right with a Swedish dining chair beneath. Perfection.

Doesn't this kitchen remind you of the one I posted yesterday from Domino?

Damask wallpaper with (most likely) ironstone platters simply adorning wall. Love it.

Love a huge bedside table--like this (like a real table!) And the three various damasks on the bed. How simple and perfect (Can't tell if the headboard is wood with a white stencil...you can find this stencil at Michael's and Hobby Lobby, BTW....or upholstered in damask-print fabric.) Don't these mix of hues work?

And this wonderful kitchen. I think the next wave of kitchens will be a barnwood-type wood cabinets. I love my white kitchen, I do, and I wouldn't change a thing. But I do think the next thing in kitchens will be reclaimed, chunky wood mixed with materials. I think if Domino were still around this is what they would be doing next. Oh, and I think no more huge islands (which I also have...and love). I think only tables in kitchens in lieu of islands or two "islands"....one for storage and one table for eating. Forgive this tangent, just been on my mind lately)

In Memoriam Week: Domino

This week I'm taking a little blogging break of sorts....I'm just too slammed, to be honest. Here's my week-at-a-glance: (by the way, have you ever seen Martha's month-at-a-glance at the beginning of her magazine? Are you kidding me? And the crazy thing is--I bet she actually completes that list.)

+ get the house clean. I mean really clean (dust under chairs, wipe baseboards, touch-up paint that matchbox cars have scratched in the kitchen, etc.) because the shoot is the 29th and 30th!! I can't wait, but if you saw this home at the moment you would laugh at me if I told you BH & G was coming in two weeks. (Anyone live in Atlanta and want to help me out? Come on over. I have wine....and strong coffee...and popsicles.)

+ get the Rue article finished. One down, one to go.

+ work on design boards with Anisa for a client (for kitchen, mudroom, dining room, hallway, master bedroom, master bathroom, living room, outdoor terrace living area, basement/ downstairs living room, front exterior. Of course I am thrilled to be working on this!!! but this is a lot of work.

+ cook for Thanksgiving feast for the boys' mothers morning out party this Thursday.

+ cook for our own Thanksgiving--we will be going to my mother-in-law's lake house at Lake Lanier next week.

+ work on finalizing the paperwork & architect plans for our Airstream barn/ cottage in our backyard.

I guess like Cher says, "I'll sleep when I'm dead."

So here is my segue to honoring those magazines who have passed away. I want to share some of my favorite images from the magazine holy trinity--Domino, Cottage Living, and Country Home.

Let's begin the week with Domino......

Definitely ahead of its time. The simple subway tiles laid in a herringbone pattern, the pops of robins' egg blue in the pendants, shelf brackets and plates. The wall-mounted oil-rubbed bronze faucet, the long & modern cabinet pulls and the eco-friendly dishwasher (wash 1/2 a load or a full load if you wish to conserve water and energy). And how Julia Child of them to install a utilitarian and beautiful pot rack and coffee cups hooks under the bottom shelf?! Love it in all its fantastic glory.

Don't you love white milk glass and woven baskets in an antique locker?

I have only seen the two spaces I'm writing about, and they are so lovely and unique--I can't wait to see the rest. It will be out soon!

Okay, and Anisa and I LOVED meeting our prospective client yesterday. You can tell they are a kind and warm family and that is exactly what kind of home they want to create: a warm one!

Here are some colors we are thinking about....

maybe some deep, smoky gray cabinets in the kitchen (they say they want this remodel to last them 20 years, so we want to stay away from trends as much as we can)

I know this blue/gray paint is cool color, but for the ceilings cool will work to elongate the rooms

a good teal will be a great accent color (especially for painting the back of some dining room built-ins)

In this mid-century brick ranch you will find the original sunny yellow-tiled bathroom! It really is groovy and they want to keep it (the kids love it!) We think we can make it tie in with the rest of the home. One way will be to incorporate this sunny and warm color as an accent in the rest of the home.

But the main inspiration photo she showed us is of a very warm living room with some wonderful and luxurious orange velvet seating. We think we have to make their dreams come true and bring in some orange!

(And of course you know we encouraged some white! We are thinking Benjamin Moore's Navajo White for the walls....a bright yet warm cream.

so I guess it pays to put yourself out there

When I started this blog in May I was bursting with passion and ideas about design (still am), so it really was a natural next step....(free!) I was spending so much time reading design blogs at night, I thought, "Why not just start one myself."

When I first wrote Sissy about fabric or something asked me if I worked in design. I said, "No. But I want to." When you know you have a strong desire about something, don't you find yourself looking for validation outside of you?

Anyway, I hope y'all are tired about me sharing everything about what it going on and starting a business. This is just how it is unfolding for us and I want to share it! I really do have a desire to have a successful design business one day, to have a shop, and to keep writing.

I was talking with a design blogger yesterday and she was telling me how a lot of designers who have their design business up-and-running and then decide to blog think negatively about bloggers who then wish to create a design business after they have been blogging (like me). I can see how they might feel that way...but life is a journey and none of us can really plan where it might take us. Well, we can plan, and we should, but "life is what happens after we have already made plans" right?

But even though I dreamed of being published one day I didn't think (if it did happen at all), that it would happen so soon. I still don't know the date but you know I will share when they are here!

And now they tell me that the renovation magazine "Kitchen and Bath Makeovers" (a sister company of BH & G) will be shooting our master bath. I am so excited!!

And the Milk and Honey team (Anisa and I) are meeting with our first prospective client today...here home in Buckhead is going through a major renovation. Fingers crossed that the family likes us!

Here is a little treat from Denmark. One of my favorite blogs in the world, Sanctuary, posted this sweet and colorful kitchen the other day. Do you not love the blue & green, the square tiles, and the rusticness? (coined a word there)

I can't get over how much my aesthetic is born from all things from Sweden and Denmark (and that is my heritage...I mean, generations ago) I know I will always love white.

On another note, yesterday I was receiving an abundance of emails. Now I know why.

Those little Homegoods scouts must be sneaky. They didn't tell me they were going to use this blog to help advertise their lamps. Hope I can help....I do love Homegoods

This is a listing of a charming home in Mobile, Alabama. Why am I looking at homes in Mobile, you ask? Good question.

Well, Katie (my online client there) was telling me a story about a home for sale in her hometown whose owners have some killer style. I had a moment so I poked around to try to find it.

I didn't find that home. But I did find this gem with a beautiful schoolhouse 10-light door and ebonized floors...

And some pretty amazing lighting.

You remember my dear friend, Anisa Darnell--

Well now she is a part of Milk & Honey Home, L.L.C.!!

I am too thrilled. We both think we bring out the best in one another and hopefully bring out the best in our clients' homes. So now if you ever need our services.....you'll get a team!

Yesterday I made a quick trip to my Anthropologie, as I so lovingly call it, the one at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. I love Lenox's Antrho, too, don't get me wrong--I'm just a Perimeter kinda girl.

The place never lacks for inspiration. Just when I think I've seen it all they place something I've seen a million times in an entirely new way--it is all about their styling. (Note to self: Interview Antrho's stylists for the blog)

Rachel McAdams' Glam Living Room (imagined)

The other day I was asked the question, "What kind of rooms do you dream of designing?"

I couldn't help but admit I do dream of decorating rooms where the sky's the limit with resources and freedom.

I have loved Rachel McAdams ever since The Notebook. She just has something--beauty, humilty, and that smile.

I can't wait to see her new movie Morning Glory.

Here is a living room I imagine for a young and single starlet.....(she is single, right? I can't keep up)

I know there is a lot going on here, but sometimes I think a room can handle a lot if you keep the colors fairly muted and neutral.

The mirror and the shell sconces on the top right would go above her mantel.

The bookcase/cabinet in the back would be covered in the white and gray floral wallpaper you see on the top shelf.

The ceiling would be the blue/gray paint color you see on the far left. I would paint her window panes the deep Orion Gray (Ralph Lauren paints).

The walls would be BM's Decorators White for that crisp, true white. The twist is I would have them be high gloss (similar to the picture below from Decorpad)

My daddy and all his kinfolk were born in Athens, Georgia. Even though I didn't go to college at UGA, Chris did. My soul bleeds red and black. But it's not just football. Athens is like a little Europe in the south. The old homes, the quaint and quirky downtown with its ubiquitous "townies", the good food, the cheap beer. I lived there briefly with a boyfriend I later married for 92 days. (Yep, was married before. I knew better...but didn't know better).

When I saw this home in October's Southern Living Magazine I said, "Yes. Lindsay Bierman knows what he's doing."

This home has soul. You can tell artists live here. And that is soo Athens.

(Sorry no Darryl Carter post yet. I had an "electric margarita" a la Urban Electric and then proceeded with two Liberty School chardonnays. I am hurting too much to deal with downloads. I know I can only have one glass. I need to grow up. I am a mom! I can't do that.)

That is what Oprah has always told us, right? "Well, this dream came true for you. Now you'll have to go and get yourself another dream", I can just hear her telling a young guest who is amazed at their new-found stardom.

Think about this guy, Darryl Carter, not too long ago when his days were filled with studying for the LSAT and reading over legal documents.

Now, flashforward to today--he is launching his new line with Urban Electric and he recently designed furniture for Thomasville. Not-too-shabby for this lawyer turned decorator.

I am tickled to be invited to meet this master of neutrals, among other things.

I have yet to read his book, but I am looking forward to snagging one so I can bend his ear for a minute. There is really nothing not beautiful I have seen from his rooms. He seems to collect like Suzanne Kasler (I adore how he styles his tableware), and has a love of white and mixing like Vicente Wolf. Yet I find him warm and classical and soft and strong at the same time. (He kinda looks that way, too)

I am excited to actually have some events I need to "dress" for, you know? My boys being four and two, I have lived in Target tops and yoga pants for years (but I still had to wear some cute Converse and funky earrings with them--my mom always preached to us that "Life is not a dress rehearsal." That has stuck with me--even in the baby fog years)

So I've got a few fun events coming up this fall and winter...

Darryl Carter at Urban Electric, big Arteriors sample sale, SCAD students' art at West Elm (Savannah College of Art & Design), Sherry Hart giving a little lesson on styling at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House, The Lavish Conference, and Better Homes & Gardens coming to shoot! Aside from marrying Chris and birthing these youngins', this is about the best year of my life.

are we influenced by Europe?

well, the short answer is, "Of course we are." Yet, sometimes, I peruse dreamy images from across the pond and it truly seems like another world.

(Oh, I could design an entire home around the color of this door)

Is it just that their homes are older and can't help but have more character? Just like how we love a rugged Paul Newman or Robert Redford as they seem to deepen with age, is this the lure of Europe's homes?

Or is it more; like the souls of those who have lived here before are added to the spaces' DNA?

One benefit to our country's economic strife is (in my opinion) I see Americans striving for more with less. Better materials, fewer square feet. Craftsman cottages beat out McMansions.

This is what I think I see in these homes from Marie Claire Maison--emphasis on beauty, finishes, timelessness. These homes do not shout "look at me"--"I am hip" "I have money" "I am somebody". To me, these homes aren't shouting anything.

They whisper.

Even this loud wallpaper is soft.

Am I generalizing in saying that these homes are obviously European?

What is it about these spaces that is so hard to nail down? Do you feel that people in the states tend to overdecorate? What do you think about these homes vs. American homes?

update on projects & winner of Ikat fabric!

Here are some fun pictures of a few updates on some projects.

I say fun...but I know that decorating online was more fun for me than for Katie and her husband in Mobile, Alabama. They worked their tails off to make this space a comfortable, beautiful and practical room for their girls.

Here is what it looks like now....

And before the custom built-ins, the cushions (so easy to wipe clean!) and pillows

(the little sweeties were a little cramped)

Now they have a place to study, play and watch movies.

Katie already has some crazy good skills, though. I was really only someone to bounce ideas off of and to help source furniture and fabric. She knew what she was doing!

She said the girls are loving their new space.

And we have had so many ideas that we have moved throughout the house...

To the living room:

moving things around and Katie bought some fabulous new pillows...

instead of spending a fortune, we (I say "we" lightly) repurposed the bench she had (and disliked a lot) by giving it some sanding, priming, and high gloss white paint.

Her chairs were given new life with some new chocolate linen...

And the dining room light got a face-lift...

Next we are working on some new bar stools for her kitchen...perhaps something natural, rustic and modern like these:

Lighting adds warmth, too--and here is the new Arteriors pendant in my client's kitchen:

The matchstick blinds replaced the wooden shutters, and new cotton panels add a little softness to the nook.

Okay, and since I'm on a project theme, I just have to share how much I think our basket light that Chris and I reworked looks like the one from Mrs. Miller's home from House Beautiful.

Do you remember this kitchen from House Beautiful?

It is small and quaint, but chock full of yumminess. Two images from Cottage Living sparked my use of the Walker Zanger tile and the see-through over the stove, but this kitchen ignited my love of limestone countertops.

(Let's do analyze above, shall we?: the mirror, the shelving without brackets (that rebar ain't cheap), and I do love the small TV...it is just a cozy space. A chef's kitchen.

I love the art on the shelves and the mix of materials. This helps to make the kitchen warm.

But I really loved this shot--the softness (and neutralness) of limestone counters.

No, they are not perfect (and many designers will tell you to "never" recommend these to a client). And I get that. If you love super-clean spaces...it is not for you.

After almost a year of being here you will find a few red wine stains we forgot to clean before we crashed into bed. But it is worth the price of beauty.

(There is a price, people. Can we say Jimmy Choo.)

Loved that HB kitchen so much we got another slab for the boys' bath.

(Again, behind on my crockpot recipes. I have learned I am definitely not a food blogger, thank goodness.)

So yesterday I had such a blast going to ADAC with Sherry and Ally. We were like kids in a candy store looking at fabric from Lulu DK (my favorite), Celerie Kemble, Oscar de la Renta and Designers Guild.

(my favorite wallpaper find of the day was "Rugosa" above by Designers Guild.)

Before we met Ally, Sherry was kind enough to show me some of her favorite, tucked-away resources. We were so in love with what we found there we couldn't even talk (the only time this happened the entire day.)

I would LOVE to use Rugosa in our hallway. Our entire home is so white, which I love, but having a dark and romantic hallway would be so fun.

And here is the recipe for meatloaf from Southern Living (I am a day behind in my recipes. How did that lady who used the crockpot everyday for a year do it?!

2 lb ground round

1 (1 oz) envelope dry onion soup mix

1 cup (4 oz) shredded sharp cheddar cheese

3/4 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1 Tbsp Worch. sauce

1 cup ketchup, divided

1 Tbsp light brown sugar

1 tsp yellow mustard

1. Combine first 6 ingredients, 1/2 cup ketchup, and 1/4 cup water; shape mixture into an 8 x 4 inch loaf. Line bottom and sides of a 4-quart oval shaped slow cooker with aluminum foil, allowing 2 inches to extend over sides. Lightly grease foil. Place loaf in slow cooker.

2. Stir together brown sugar, mustard, and remaining 1/2 cup ketchup; spread over top of loaf. Cover and cook on LOW 5-6 hours or until a meat thermometer registers 160 degrees. Lift loaf from slow cooker, using foil sides as handles. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. NOTE: You may also prepare in a 5-qt slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW 3 1/2 hours or until a meat thermometer registers 160 degrees.

How comforting is this picture? The laundry and pillows add that extra touch.

Do you have "sleeping porches" where you live? Here, in Georgia, we really still do. Of course, they originated prior to the invention of air conditioning and you had to sleep on the porch to catch a cool breeze every now and then in the blazing summers. Now, they evoke memories of napping on my mema's porch and the smell of something good cooking inside.

Now that our indoor living areas are "done" (of course I say that lightly), I want to focus on using the space we have outside. How comforting is this vignette from Country Home? I love having meals outdoors.

Okay, not trying to compete with the amazing food blogs, but one great thing about having a blog is you can journal about something you want to do and (hopefully) you have readers to hold you accountable.

I had time to read October's Southern Living while riding up to the lake. (We rode to my mother-in-law's lakehouse to get measurements on our Airstream that is still parked there! We are getting ready to build our Airstream barn/cottage in the backyard this fall...and I can't wait to blog about it....and decorate the interior of the trailer!)

Back to the magazine: It was so good, I thought. Chock full of good ideas, interiors & recipes. (As well as a great article written by Lisa Mowry, who will be writing about our home for BH & G, about becoming an extra for films.)

I got inspired by the 7 recipes for slow-cookers. I am challenging myself to dust off my crock pot and test out some fall meals for the week (I love to cook, but I've been so busy lately I've been bad about asking Chris to pick up Thai on his way home or running by Chic-fil-a too much. Too expensive and not good for my hiney)

Meal 1: King Ranch Chicken

(I followed it exactly--except for the cheese. I used 2 oz instead of 8)

(Worth the money--rotisserie chicken. If you have a Whole Foods near you, I recommend the salt & pepper one)

We loved it! It's a keeper.

And I new find this weekend at my favorite antiques store

(and painted nickel), this baroque mirror.

(I promise I won't post about the shop everyday, I'm just really excited about it!)

I wanted to share that Seleta is having a garage sale near Atlanta tomorrow. She's having it at her friend's home and said she has to get rid of a ton of stuff!

I thought this would be a good opportunity to let you know that my friend & fellow decorator, Anisa Darnell, are setting up a little online shop for y'all. When I began blogging I had no idea I would ever do this....things have just unfolded organically.

These will be things that haven't worked out for a client, things we have made or reworked, or finds that we would love for our home (but we just can't buy anymore because we want to stay married). We will price them fairly... Here are a few items from Anisa today: Check it out here

So I have mentioned before that my friend, Jillian, told me that it takes a year to actually move into a house. I didn't believe it....but now I think it is true.

In December, we will have been here for a year. I have been on a decorating rampage since then, but am just now getting around to really setting up "systems". Does your home have order and places for all the tons and tons of paperwork and crap that comes your way...or are you still struggling like myself?

These little folders from Target are helping. I love the natural fabric and the little bit of teal in the label. They help getting all the piles off the counter--you know--bills that must be paid tomorrow, grocery lists, preschool permission slips and mail.

I had a great chalkboard organizer here (from IKEA), but it broke.

I'm pleased with this new system!

(sweet Kate, pictured here, did the labels for me. BH & G wouldn't be coming to shoot here without her! She worked her hiney off helping me get this house ready. Chris was in Virginia about the entire month prior to them coming. I have never worked so hard in my life!)

She helped me move all the papers and fabric samples and such downstairs.

As much as I would love to actually "work" in our pretty office upstairs, this isn't possible with two little ones who see everything as a toy. We had to store stuff in a area that can be baby-gated off.

Chris (and Kate) thought I was silly to use our old dining table as a desk--but it works and is free!

It may be silly again to show you all of the little details, but I love this ceramic key hook from Anthropologie with brass hooks. God's in the details, right?

And I finally have a working system in the laundry room now that the paisley stencil is done. Being organized really frees up your mind for creativity, don't you think?

We added hooks that are cute & functional.

And I love our sink skirt made from a TJ Maxx toile shower curtain & velcro.

In my opinion, the best ever! And I'm not lying about the title of this post. Sure, I think $34 is crazy money for a magazine...but I pay that for books that have inspired me less. (And I will pay it for Rue, too, of course, if they were to print as well!!)

Thank you all so much for your sweet comments about the upcoming shoot with Better Homes & Gardens. Still can't believe it...we are beyond excited. I promise to fill you in on what I can....I do know a few people who will be here: the editor locally is Lisa Mowry, the Senior Editor for BH & G is Oma Blaise Ford (who will also be in Atlanta for the Lavish! Conference ) and the stylist will be Annette Joseph.

I am tired today because I went to see a friend's band (East Ponce Soul Faction) play at a bar Saturday night. I really don't feel like I've been to a bar in ten years. And we stayed to hear them play their last song--I'm so proud of myself.

I had a blast. I like doing it once or twice a year--how did I ever do it every weekend?

Do you know who they opened up for? A band called "Dumpstafunk" (Aaron Neville's son). There is nothing more I can say about that name.

Okay...on to decorating.

We're about 75% completed with the home. They wanted "Restoration Hardware meets Veranda meets Modern meets Worldly". Tall order.

I am calling this "decorate with what you have" because, let's face it, most of us are on a budget. I have never known anyone who hires someone to decorate carte blanche (but how fun would that be?!). Most of us create our rooms over time...

So here we are keeping the older sofa. We restuffed the pillows and added some new ones.

When they moved into their home six years ago she was pregnant, so when her aunt offered to give the walls a faux treatment like Tuscany, they happily accepted.

So the wall color(s) is staying, and we are working with it (it was very expensive)

We have added a modern floor lamp, a tolix-ish stool, and a few accessories to give her that Veranda feel. (wall decor is in the works as well) The leather club chairs are new, along with the rustic coffee table, but the rug and armoire are what they have had for a while.

One must-have for her (and large-ticket item) is this driftwood mirror from Arteriors.

She really wanted it on the mantle, but I wanted to stress to her how beautiful this mirror would be in her formal dining room. She couldn't see it, so I thought I would just show her. I loaded up my own lamps from my entry room to try to get the point across.

I ended up selling my chrome lamps!

She felt so bad she went out to try to replicate them for me...

She didn't do too bad! (This is full service decorating, people :)

I know we're not done, but I do feel it coming together. I think with even a budget of $500 you can get someone to help rearrange what you have, "shop" and repurpose from your own home, and EDIT! I think editing is key...and everything.

So I'm going to get some much-needed sleep. I'm not going to apologize anymore from my rambling posts...if you have read this blog before you're used to it!

It is so funny that Chris works with a camera all day...yet I am the picture-taker of the family.

I love walking around the home before the sun sets and snap a few shots of the glow.

(by the way, if you are thinking of stenciling a room....do it! And do it in a metallic paint. The sparkle is fantastic.)

I need to take a class...one day. I am loving decorating, writing & blogging too much now.

I enjoy playing around with the focus.

Not everyone is happy with my new-found hobby.

They are becoming immune to mom with a camera.

I am shocked these boys pull fresh basil from the herb garden and eat it while they play.

I know he's too old for the paci (or "nani" as we call it). We're getting there...

Do you remember this one? A widower transformed his new, builder-grade digs into something that will transport you to Provence. I am typing from memory, so forgive me if I'm wrong...I believe he found the soapstone sink at a yardsale and he poured the concrete countertops himself. The treatment on the cabinets and floors really give this kitchen some "age"....but not cheesy, faux patina--it looks authentic to me.

I love concrete tops....we looked into them, but the labor is what costs you..not the materials. If Chris wasn't working so much he could have poured ours himself, but to pay someone they can run about $80/ sq ft.

all types of slipcovers

So Jen, this is for you an anyone else looking to slipcover some chairs. Image: Atlanta Bartlett

To update my client's dining room, we are planning to slipcover the two dining chairs and the ends of the table. This will change the look of the room by lightening it with the white fabric and adding more texture to the room.

I love the "slipcover" above because it is loose and informal...I think even sexy. I write "slipcover" because I think she just draped & tied a sheet around the chair.

I really like these because they are sleek and straight, with only one pleat on the bottom.

I think the straight cover will work best in their dining room, as opposed to ruffled covers (like Windsor Smith's design here)

We are planning to monogram the backs of the slipcovers...their initial with a crown above it.

I think this will be our best option--a long, simple and mostly straight slipcover...either in white cotton duck, linen blend or denim (bleach!!) I would like to see the skirt just kissing the floor.

I am a big fan of slipcovers. They are cost-effective because you can repurpose a good, old piece of furniture and they last a while because you can pull it off, unzip them and throw them in the wash!

reader request: what design books inspire you?

Abby, this one's for you....

Basically, as a former English teacher, the question is what do I not read. I am a reader. My mema is a reader and I guess I get that from her...really no one else in my family is a "reader".

I define a "reader" as one who has a kindle, books by the bed, book in stacks in every place imaginable, books in the basement, books in boxes and books loaned out to people you can't remember. A reader takes a separate bag on trips for reading material. Your favorite Christmas or birthday gift is a B & N gift card, and there are times you have chosen to eat on the cheap so you can afford lunch and a magazine.

You either are or your aren't. It is a blessing and a curse.

So here is just a sampling of design material that inspires me. I have more where this came from...but I really learn a lot from design blogs. I read many that are my aesthetic, but I really learn more when I read those that stretch me....push me beyond my style. No one I decorate for will have my exact style, so I need to learn about all types of furniture, lighting, room arrangements, you name it.

Liam is modeling above the new Coastal Living "bookazine" ($11 people, not a magazine! Be careful when you pick up one of those for they are not $5) This is a no-brainer for me. Many Cottage Living folk moved their offices' location to this publication, so I easily love almost every page. It inspires me, but because it is my style I don't learn too much. I already live in white rooms with vertical boards!!

Okay, long post, but let's go in order, shall we?

If you are a design-lover and you don't own this, then you may be telling a little white lie when you say you love design. Yes, it is the ubiquitous book you see on every coffee table and styled vignette, but it is popular for a reason. It kicks butt!

(above you see I got mine from Anthropologie years ago when it promised a Domino subscription upon purchase. So sad that I received Lucky instead when it folded. But of course I already has a Domino subscription, anyway!)

I love its illustrations and wallpapered pages....

I love this kitchen!

There is not a better one! Do you see that CHUNK of marble and the glossy subway tile with white grout everywhere!!! And those stools and the wood chairs. Just perfection.

I guarantee you Gwyneth used this picture as inspiration here. I just know it.

See her chunky countertop and subway tiles everywhere (but, yeah, because she is loaded why not make the subway tiles marble, too...who needs ceramic?)

And the wallpaper and colors. Just phenomenal!

intermission of cuteness

This book is not French country like your neighbor's rooster sitting above her cherry-stained counters. This is real country homes in France full of rustic goodness and industrical chic. But not trying to be chic--just utilitarian-like greatness.

And if you have read this blog at all, you know I love stylist/designer Atlanta Bartlett.

If you love neutral, white, and a relaxed sensibility, you will love her, too.

Along this same, no-brainer theme is Thrifty Chic. If you like repurposing Good Will finds and using "junk" in a beautiful new context....this book is for you.

(man, I wish I got a little kick back for these positive reviews I'm giving)

This next book inspires me as much for the text as for the images. I don't think I can say that for any other book.

The Novogratz' Downtown Chic is chock full of inspiring quotes and stories. They make me think, "Yeah, I can do it, too. And I don't have 7 kids!!!"

And I know I have said this before, but I am particularly fond of Cortney because she is from Columbus, GA and has kept her southern drawl.

How great is this quote from John Lennon? The best. And those caned-back white chairs with blue leather, vinyl or oil-cloth just knocks me sideways. They continue to be imaginative.

Okay, I think I'll leave you with the above quote from Ms. Joplin. I'll do a Part II with my remaining favorite books...I gotta go pay some bills and play outside!

I can't believe how much I missed pictures! Are we not so spoiled with our instant gratification? I know I am. Five bucks paid to Goggle and I'm back with a little eye candy for ya.

I rarely post about fashion, but I am so loving some of the things Garnet Hill is currently offering I just had to share. I love this look...but really I think I love this model and this braid. (sidenote: are you typically drawn to models with your hair color? just curious)

These boots are so sexy and refined.

I start living in boots and dresses as soon as there is the first slight chill. Yes, this look is

how I define rock-n-roll these days. You can't much hotter than her.

And this coat! Love it. Okay, what about this coat with a white J Crew tee and black

leather pants. I don't care if leather pants are in or out (nor do I know), but wouldn't that outfit be cool?

This piece of art is rockin, I think. Remember this from Atlanta Home & Lifestyles Christmas House last year? My client and I spied this at Stanton this week. It was 1,200...now 199! I don't see this working in many rooms...but it is incredible.

These are the bentwoods we got for her breakfast nook--I love the use of black metal here instead of wood. Adds a little spice to their kitchen.

It's slowly coming together (capiz pendant and window treatments to be completed soon) And we'll change the centerpiece...:)

I think this black moulding is really sexy.

I am loving our new bar downstairs! We paired black iron vintage sconces with two deals

from Ballard's Backroom (the stools and mirror). The stools got four coats of white dove (leftover trim paint--semi-gloss). I told Chris he needs to have the guys over and play cards. He kinda laughed at me. I guess it isn't quite manly, is it? (letters from Hobby Lobby)

For another texture, I love some black or cream felt pillows in a room. Aren't these pretty? (from PB Teen)

I love this white capiz table lamp, too. Wouldn't this be nice as a desk lamp or maybe a countertop in a kitchen? Somewhere unexpected.

And Anthro is rocking it out with this coffee table. How unique!

And maybe this mirror...

In this bathroom instead of this white one (I LOVE this simple skirt. When I rented a home in Little Five Points in my '20s I cut my green silk Anthro skirt and velcroed it to my sink!)

And these shades....somewhere!!

And I love these Old Schools from Emerson Made. Bell bottoms are so rock-and-roll to me. But I have always been a little on the hippie side. Here is evidence below:

I pick up the boys from Mom's Morning Out and Wyatt has his entire lunch left. I guess I can't blame a two year-old for not wanting sugar snap peas, organic carrots in a bamboo bowl. Liam said, "Mom, why can't we get red boxes like Luca gets (read Happy Meal)." Sorry, boys.

Classic Interiors: Central Park South

You know...I really want to strive to post as much original material as I can. I don't know if I felt this way when I first started blogging...but I do now.

I want to post more of my home and my work (we just got some crazy-good stuff for a client today). I want to do more interviews and hopefully share more about my contributions to Rue. I am also lucky enough to have friends who have some amazing style and I hope to share their homes with you...along with the interiors of some of my favorite shops and restaurants in Atlanta. I am working on getting Chris to allow us into his film-world a little; I want to share a bit about set design and some of the wonderful homes where they shott.

That being said, sometimes you gotta just repost some stuff. This apartment with a "million-dollar view" in Manhattan was shot by Jamie of the photography blog from me-to you. reader request: lighting sources

Hey Whitney....this is for you.

I guess we do have a mix of lighting throughout the house. I think lighting is really the most important aspect of decor, so I love adding sconces, lamps and ceiling lights wherever possible...and on dimmers, too!

I realize these are the same images I just posted...anybody else on blogger having a tough time trying to upload pictures?

Anyway...here are the sources for the lights pictured below. Although they may appear to be a mix, my list may prove a bit uninspiring. You will see it hit the same spots over and over...

The lamp in the corner is from Pottery Barn Outlet (it may be a West Elm piece since they are owned by the same company). The sconces on the mantel are from Progressive Lighting. $5 each. Not kidding.

The basketweave pendants in the boys' rooms are from the same PB Outlet. These are from the PB Kids line. Wyatt's floor lamp is IKEA.

The majority of the lamps, though, are from Homegoods. For fun, trendy lamps you really can't beat them. The one below was $39 and the base is a light gray.

The sconces for Liam's bed are from Crate & Barrel. These were a bit of a splurge at around $150 each. I love that they are not swing-arm, though...for that would have just turned into two swing-arm lamps flying across the room!

The light above our bed is from Target. It was from the Shabby Chic line several years ago (although I did see on in our target this year for around $30). I think I may have bought it before our first child when I thought we were having a girl. The original paint was white with pink flowers. I just spray-painted it chrome. I love this simple light.

Again, the table lamps are from Homegoods. This triple-drum shade is white eyelet lace. I believe around $50 each.

This floor lamp (are you yawning yet?) is HG, too. I promise I just saw the same one in Anthropologie for about $450! This one around $60.

This chandelier is from Lowe's at $100. The star pendant in the entry is Ballards and the two chrome table lamps from Homegoods....again.

Our exterior boasts two more star pendants (can't have too much of a good thing!)....these from Pottery Barn---and the two bronze barn lights next to the door are Ballard Designs.

And do you want to see how us married folk ended our date night last night? We did have a wonderful dinner out...but instead of having dessert out somewhere else or going to hear music, we ended our date at Target to get the kids some pajamas. Please tell me we're not the only ones who do this. Julie
